Iron Gate, located near Dupont Circle, stands as one of the district’s oldest continuously operating restaurants and is split between a sumptuous dining room, a wisteria covered patio and a handsomely enclosed carriageway that houses the bar. Chef Anthony Chittum, a native of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and his team have revitalized the space with a menu that takes inspiration for the cuisines of Greece, Sicily, Sardinian and Southern Italy, interpreting those traditions and techniques using the finest products and seasonal ingredients of the Mid-Atlantic. Iron Gate also serves as an idyllic oasis for fine private events both large and small, so please consider us when planning your next fête, we'd love to have you as our guests.
“We came here for a celebration brunch, and it was an amazing experience. Their back patio is really charming, even during the day, and it made for a great atmosphere. We started with the fritto misto, then had the lamb burger and the gnocchi as our main courses. Everything was delicious, and I was definitely full by the end of the meal. I'd highly recommend both dishes. The combination of lamb, feta, and harissa in the burger worked really well, and I especially loved the pomodoro sauce with the gnocchi. My only small critique is the coffee. It tasted a bit stale and bitter. That said, it didn't take away from the overall experience at all. I'd definitely come back, especially to try their dinner menu.”
“A true hidden gem! Iron Gate’s outdoor courtyard feels like a quick escape to Napa, with a laid-back yet sophisticated atmosphere that’s very hard to find in DC. Everything from the coffee and cocktails to the appetizers — try the arancini! — and mains is excellent. 👏👏👏”
“We came here to celebrate my birthday and loved every minute of it. The food was delicious, and the outdoor seating area was perfect for a beautiful May evening. What really made the experience stand out, though, was the exceptional service — Joey and Mario were incredibly friendly, attentive, and helpful throughout the night. They truly made our celebration feel special. Excellent job all around!”
“We had our baby shower at Iron Gate in the private event space and it was absolutely beautiful. The menu was well curated, and they even let us personalize it. 10/10 recommend for any small or medium gathering you have!”
“My husband and I went here for our birthday (we have the same birthday). We picked it because of its reputation in DC as being a romantic and intimate spot. The restaurant was as charming as its reputation suggests - low lighting, well-spaced tables, deep-toned and moody interior decor. The atmosphere had a low din of chatter but it read more like pleasant background noise and never interrupted our ability to hear each other or enjoy each other’s company. As an initial note, I was charmed by how committed Iron Gate is to embracing their Mediterranean offerings beyond the food: their wine list was exclusively Mediterranean wines which I deem really unusual. This is especially true at more upscale restaurants in the same echelon as Iron Gate, where wine menus still tend to embrace big name regions like France and Napa even if the food is from a different region. Our cocktails were delicious, balanced, and unique. There wasn’t a single dish we tried that I didn’t like. The portions were generous and we walked away from the meal feeling (almost) too full. While atmosphere, food, and drink were all wonderful, the service we received was what took this experience from great to one-for-the-books. We had a great waiter—I wish I remembered his name—and he made us feel so special all night. He knew we were celebrating our shared birthday and made a fuss about it at every opportunity he could. We added on the wine pairing with the prix fixe menu and also had a blast talking wine with our waiter. At one point, he even brought us out his favorite wine at Iron Gate as an additional tasting because he could tell we were wine people and was having fun discussing wines with us. At the end of the night, we asked if we could have a cork to add to our collection and he specifically went and found the cork to our favorite wine from the night. It was these little thoughtful gestures that made us feel like people not just customers. I raved about this meal for weeks afterwards and would definitely go back. The only flag I’d include is that I don’t think this is an “all-purpose” stand out. I think this spot has a much more tailored appeal: it’s a fantastic spot for couples or adults out on date night, anniversaries, or birthday celebrations. I’m not as sure I’d bring children here: both because I wouldn’t enjoy having them there, and because I’m not sure they’d enjoy being there. But that’s at base a personal choice. Overall, if you’re looking for really delicious, elevated Mediterranean fare in an appealing, intimate, yet unfussy atmosphere, look no further than here.”
