The Ninth is a restaurant by chef Jun Tanaka. Located on Charlotte street in the heart of London’s buzzy Fitzrovia neighbourhood, the contemporary, yet warm and inviting restaurant offers up simple yet refined French Mediterranean-style dishes, all made for sharing. The menu focuses on the finest seasonal produce with vibrant and clean flavours.
“We dont eat in michelin starred restaurants all the time so little to compare, but ive never eaten a meal where pretty much every bite was a revelation. We ate the seasonal tasting dish and it just seemed to start at extreme quality and taste and just kept getting better with each course. 1000% recommended and glad we saw it on Sorted and could try it.”
“Spectacular meal. Cozy atmosphere that feels somewhat casual for a place with such great food. Had the lunch menu which was the best value I’ve had at a Michelin star restaurant. Not only that but it was one of the best 1 stars I have been to. Really highly recommend this spot and I will be back in the summer to sit out on the terrace. Highlights were Lamb ragu starter and Iberico Pork main + the roast potatoes (best I’ve ever had).”
“Overall, we had a fantastic experience at The Ninth. The restaurant boasts a relaxed, cozy ambience and an unpretentious interior that makes for a welcoming change from the typical atmosphere of a Michelin-starred establishment. The "Chef’s Choice" tasting menu was a highlight. While the portions were modest, every dish was delicious. The Truffle Conchiglie, Iberico Pork, and the signature Pain Perdu were particularly exceptional. The menu is designed for sharing, and while we felt fully satisfied by the end (especially after adding the cheese course), the portions could afford to be slightly more generous. It's worth noting that the à la carte prices appeared somewhat steep relative to the portion sizes we saw at neighboring tables. While the staff were polite, the service didn't quite reach the polished standard one expects from a one-star restaurant: At times, it was difficult to understand the staff over the ambient background noise. We noticed a lack of proactive service - empty glasses weren't topped up, and we had to ask for extra bread and crackers for our cheese. In this tier of dining, the "devil is in the detail," and a bit more speed and attention would bring the service in line with the high quality of the kitchen. Despite these minor gripes, the quality-to-price ratio is excellent. I definitely recommend making an advanced reservation and paying them a visit.”
“Absolutely loved The Ninth! The food was incredible, full of flavour and beautifully presented. The atmosphere was stylish but still cosy, and the staff were super friendly and attentive. Our server was really nice, she was from Japan, if I'm not mistaken. Definitely one of my favourite spots in London—can’t wait to come back! Tried the crab tartlets, sardines on brioche, fried artichoke, yellowtail crudo (super good!), conciglie truffle and venison loin. 10/10 ❤️”
“We tried The Ninth in London, a Michelin star restaurant, and were honestly shocked. It makes no sense to us how this place has a Michelin star. Even without that, it still would not have been a good experience. This was genuinely one of the worst restaurants we’ve been to. From the moment we arrived, the experience was off. The hostess who seated us was not friendly at all and immediately told us we had the table for one hour, even though the restaurant was mostly empty the entire time. It also took a while for the food to come, which made that even more confusing. The sourdough bread was very basic. For starters, we had the burrata, truffle pasta, and sea bream ceviche. The truffle pasta was particularly disappointing, and we did not finish it. When we mentioned it to the waitress, she asked if we wanted to order something else, but we would have expected it to at least be removed from the bill, which it wasn’t. For mains, we had the grilled sea bream and hake. Both were bland, tasteless, and completely forgettable. The pan perdu dessert was good, but not enough to change the overall experience. Overall, the food, service, and atmosphere were all disappointing. Definitely not somewhere we would return to.”
