Through a series of unmarked doors and a hidden hallway you’ll discover Bar Orso, a cocktail lounge from the team behind Merchant Roots. Surrounded by clever curiosities and natural elements, enjoy California-hearted craft libations in an intimate, dimly lit setting where the mood is art nouveau meets national park. À la carte service available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Libation pairing menu only Friday Saturday. Unlike its theme-shifting sister restaurant Merchant Roots, BAR ORSO depicts a single, transportive world… an immersive woodland escape where guests drink their way through California’s wilderness. Chef Ryan Shelton and his team collaborated to concoct 15 bold, maximalist alcoholic and non-alcoholic libations that showcase their culinary prowess including housemade fernet, candy cap mushroom ice cream, green tea cotton candy, and caraway and rye tincture.
“What an amazing experience! Unique and sophisticated cocktails, extremely friendly and passionate staff, we won’t forget our night there and can’t wait to come back for the new menu!”
“You gotta walk through a dark hallway and it’s kinda misleading hahaha The small bites are great, designed with thoughts and very innovative. Some of the drinks went too wild in terms of flavor profile. But the bartender was so warm in making our night meaningful and he remade drinks for us. Overall great value for enjoying Michelin- level food & drinks without spending $400.”
“What a fun stop! Intended to stop for one cocktail. We ended up eating some delicious appetizers, a yummy cookie, and having several cocktails. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. Drinks were very unique and yummy , and staff was even better. We felt like royalty. Cant wait to come back.”
“I feel a bit of guilt writing this review but it's important to highlight the flaws of the evening which reflects the rating that's deserved as one would expect a place like this to strive for perfection. I'll preface by saying I loved the drink that was recommended to me, and everything that we ate was delicious. The service, however, was not up to par. My friend had been seated and ordered already when I arrived. The bartender acknowledged me but did not bring me a water. She tried to take my order a bit pre-maturely, then when I let her know I was ready she started to try to take my order then paused to check someone else in rather than continue to give me her attention. Once I placed my order I asked her water, which she seemed to acknowledge and even the man behind the bar (the owner?) asked if I wanted still or sparkling but we already had it at the spot, I just needed a glass Some time passed without getting it and I had to ask a second time. I mentioned the food was all great. My drink had a layer of frozen sorbet on top and there was so much that I had to eat it off to get to the drink. The man behind the bar saw me struggling and gave me a small spoon, which apparently was supposed to have come with the drink to begin with. Everyone was friendly and things were tasty but I felt forgettable. I would give it another try and hope they get their act together.”
“Went shortly after opening so it may have improved. We spent $140 per person, before tip, for for the cocktail menu with food pairing. The food portions were tiny snacks, and many of the drink pours were half sizes. It was especially egregious because the same food and drink items were on the a la carte menu, but getting them via the tasting ended up being WAY more expensive because they split items between two people. The bartenders were so warm and kind, but most of the drinks didn't land and felt half baked. I really love Merchant Roots and have been several times, but Bar Orso was an enormous disappointment. I never leave bad reviews but this has stuck with me for months.”
