Poogan's Porch

“Our family had a fantastic dining experience at Poogan's Porch! Every dish was exceptional—we ordered the pimento fritters, fried green tomatoes, the fried chicken entree, and the shrimp and grits. While everything was delicious, the standout for me was the bacon jam served with the pimento fritters. It was heavenly and elevated everything it touched (especially smeared on a fried green tomato!). A huge part of our great visit was our fantastic waitress. I believe her name was Reese but I cannot recall for sure. She was warm, engaging, and clearly loves her job. We loved chatting with her about our time in Charleston and getting her local recommendations. She shared details about her own experiences with the city, as well as her upcoming travels to visit family near Boston. I could also overhear her being just as lovely to every other table she served. She was also very helpful with assisting us in making choices between different menu items. Pro-tip for parking: Our 5:45 pm reservation time made it easy to score free, close street parking. There is an inexpensive garage nearby, but it tends to fill up early in the day.”

“We had Poogan’s for dinner and I have to say we loved it. We needed to move our reservation from 8pm to 5pm and they were very nice and accommodating. The restaurant itself is beautiful and clean. Our server was awesome and attentive. Now the food. The biscuits were no lie the best I may have ever had. Light and fluffy and perfect start. We both got the Sweet tea glazed Salmon. It was flakey and fresh. The glaze was sweet and gave it a delicious flavor. The only thing I would say was the potatoes were undercooked. Overall we had an amazing experience and will definitely come back!”

“First time here, was apparently a slow day as we were able to walk in and get seated immediately, which was great. The staff, and our server in particular, were amazing. Super knowledgeable and helpful. The pimento cheese balls for an appetizer were absolutely delicious. The Bloody Marys were very good, and the complimentary biscuits were heavenly with the fresh whipped butter. The shrimp and grits were not quite as good as we expected given all of the hype around them. They were good, but not amazing. The biscuits and gravy with eggs were also good, but nothing super special, and honestly I feel like had too many different flavors going on for what should be a simple traditional dish. Overall we had a good experience and would recommend it, with tempered expectations.”

“Overall, our experience at Poogan's Porch was mixed. Great atmosphere and a lovely setting for dinner, but the food was hit or miss. We ordered fried green tomatoes as our appetizer at the waiters suggestion but they never arrived. Our main courses arrived quickly, but the catch of the day came out cold. I did enjoy the shrimp and grits, but I'm not sure they would rank as some of the best in the city in my opinion. The manager was very attentive and offered us a choice of desserts to make up for our missing appetizer, but they were also underwhelming. The key lime pie lacked flavor and the peach cobbler was very liquidy. An iconic Chalreston establishment, but maybe not worth a special trip just to eat here.”

“I was really looking forward to Poogan’s with reviews and recommendations. In my opinion this is a skip for the price. I had the chicken and dumplings it was salty and warmish. I wish the food was served hotter. Also had the shrimp and grits and same thing barely warm. For dessert we shared a banana pudding that really just tasted like vanilla pudding. The service was great and it was an ok atmosphere.”
