“Had a casual dinner here on a Monday night around 6:30 pm. Not crowded and plenty of seating. We were greeted courteously by the hostess and were sat at a table quickly . The decor and design of the interior was beautiful, somewhat dim and can be utilized for either casual dinners or a date night. Server was quick and attentive to get to us at our table , explained the daily specials and other menu items. Water came nicely chilled with no ice and tasted very clean which is a big deal for me - nothing worse than asking for a water and it tasting off. For food I went with the grilled Texas redfish, Brussels sprouts, and rice. The redfish was fresh and I could taste the grill on the fish. Perfectly cooked throughout tender and moist with a lemon butter sauces. The portion seemed to be 6 ounces weight of fish . My sides were decent but nothing spectacular. The brussel sprouts were cooked perfect, softened but still with texture , and some crispy outer leaves. They were , however , not as strong with Flavor or seasoning as I would have hoped. I’ve had better at chain restaurants such as Longhorn steakhouse . The rice, while cooked well , was basic with taste . Not bad by any stretch , and glistening with whatever fat or oil they used - but relatively bland. I would try different sides next time Overall , it’s a well put together establishment and obviously the seafood is the star here. If they could step up their game in regards to the side dishes - the food would have been a 5/5 instead of a 4/5. Plenty of parking at the designated lot attached to the restaurant.”
“I stopped by J. Alexander’s and tried the Brasserie Chicken along with their sweet tea. The chicken was perfectly cooked—juicy and tender—with a rich, savory sauce that paired beautifully with the sides. The flavors felt balanced and comforting, like a refined take on a classic bistro dish. The sweet tea was just the right level of sweetness, refreshing without being syrupy. Service was attentive and warm, making the whole experience feel relaxed yet upscale. Definitely a spot I’d return to for a reliably great meal.”
“Came for a wine dinner. Have no complaints...food was solid, though nothing amazing. Atmosphere is similar to many steakhouse, nothing that stands out. Waitstaff/bartender were excellent. Very personable and attentive. Would return.”
“Husband and I tried this place for the first time for Valentine's Day dinner. Wavered between a 4 or a 5. The food was decadent - creamy, flavorful, has a little kick but overall a little heavy. Calamaris and marinara sauce were probably my favorite, plus the Mac n cheese, but couldn't eat much of any of my food (trout almondine with mustard beurre blanc and couscous and broccoli) - while the char on the trout was exquisite, the big couscous with bell peppers was difficult to eat for me in terms of flavor combo with the beurre blanc. The parmesan on the couscous and broccoli made them palatable. The Mac n cheese was heavenly but again was so decadent that we could only eat half. We also got dessert which was gigantic - appreciate their big portions. They also didn't have any sweet tea (only non sweet) when I asked for half and half, and that didn't have non caffeinated fruit teas - one server said they had chamomile but then they didn't. Our server Jim was absolutely fantastic and so thoughtful and sweet, not annoying or imposing, very respectful. The ambience was calm with candles and dim lighting. I really liked our booth and felt we had a lot of privacy. Note that you need to make a reservation ahead of time - a guy came in with his wife and child and said that they were on the wait-list but the hostess said they were fully booked for the night. Probably will order the salad next time and it'll prob be a 5.”
“A $50 Disappointment at J. Alexander’s I generally expect a certain level of consistency from J. Alexander’s, but my recent visit to the Houston location was a masterclass in how to ruin a premium cut of meat and ignore a guest's experience. We ordered a filet mignon requested at medium. What arrived was essentially blue—completely cold and raw in the center, bearing all the hallmarks of a steak that was still frozen when it hit the grill. When we sent the $50 steak back, we hoped for a correction. Instead, the kitchen doubled down on the error. The "Correction" The steak returned charred to a crisp on the outside, yet it remained vividly raw and gelatinous in the middle. It is clear the kitchen staff does not understand the basic physics of heat transfer or how to properly temper meat before cooking. You shouldn't have to choose between "burnt" and "raw" for fifty dollars. Service & Management The food was only half the problem. The Waitstaff (Judy): While they went through the motions of taking the plate back, there was zero acknowledgement of the quality failure. The Management: A total "no-show." Despite a ruined $50 entrée and a clearly frustrated table, the manager never bothered to stop by, offer an apology, or attempt to make the situation right. If you are looking for a properly cooked steak and professional service, I suggest looking elsewhere in Houston. At these price points, "burnt-raw" is unacceptable. Final Verdict: Save your money. The kitchen can't hit a simple temperature, and the management doesn't seem to care.”
