In 1979, at the age of 25, Michael McCarty founded Michael’s Santa Monica, a restaurant credited as an early pioneer of California cuisine with its market-driven plates that utilize local produce and hyper-seasonal ingredients. Throughout the years, Michael has spearheaded the restaurant’s evolution, bringing in a veritable who’s who of culinary talent that includes current chef Job Carder, as well as opening chef Jonathan Waxman, Nancy Silverton, Brooke Williamson, Sang Yoon, Mark Peel, Miles Thompson, Frank Fermin among others; and along the way, he authored Welcome to Michael’s: Great Food, Great People, Great Party!, which received a 2008 James Beard Foundation Cookbook award nomination in the entertaining category. Michael continues to walk the floor at Michael’s Santa Monica when he’s not splitting his time in New York, where he operates a different iteration of Michael’s in midtown Manhattan. Both restaurants feature modern art treasures, as curated by McCarty and his wife (an artist herself) Kim, and boast award-winning wine lists, which include the latest vintages from McCarty's own The Malibu Vineyard.
“Great spot with a great happy hour. All I can comment on is the lamb burger and uni spoon. Lamb burger was perfectly prepared and uni (spoon, right?) was special. I would have kept going but I'm trying to eat less the else days andI chose the wrong place. To do that at. I'd love to know how the trout is so I guess I'm going back. Thanks Jesus.”
“Hosted my wedding at Michael's and it was truly incredible. Staff, location, chef, food, ambiance all 10/10. Highly recommend it for any kind of private event. We had 75 people and it could not have gone better! Everyone raved about the food and the vibe in the atrium Also love coming here for happy hour, will be coming here for years!”
“Michael's is a Santa Monica institution that I have been bringing clients to for years. The legendary garden patio is one of the most beautiful dining settings in Southern California, framed by art from the owner's personal collection. The California cuisine is thoughtfully executed with quality ingredients, and the lunch service is particularly wonderful for a relaxed mid-day meeting. For buyers transitioning to Santa Monica from other cities, dining here feels like a genuine introduction to the best of California living.”
“My favorite happy hour in the area but dinner is expensive and just okay. They’ve started doing cool happy hour specials that’s different each day of the week, ie oyster Wednesday, martini pitcher Thursday, fish and chips Friday. Michaels is a regular spot I go to with my friends and I bring all of my out of town friends here”
“i really wanted to believe this place was better, the service by upper management doesnt trickle down at all. food came out cold - twice, waited too long for another drink to find out they never place the order. i had three different waiters so you would assume better service but alas no one knew what the other was discussing”
