Danny Bowien, chef and co-founder of Mission Chinese, started the concept as a pop-up inside an existing restaurant in San Francisco. This collaboration between Cha Kee and Mission Chinese is a nod to those transformative years in San Francisco—coming full circle. The Mission Chinese team is immensely grateful for the opportunity to work within the vibrant Chinatown community at Cha Kee, alongside their esteemed staff.

“It was Saturday evening around 5;30pm, we made a reservation. Not sure why there are a lot of disappointed people here giving bad rating, but I thought everything was good. The servers were very courteous and not pushy. We ordered crispy beef (appetizer), Chinese broccoli, pepper steak, and steamed fish. Everything was good, no complaints. Sometimes Chinese food makes me sick due to the use of msg but I felt good after eating what we ordered. The menu is creative, I was surprised to see some atypical interpretation of traditional Chinese dishes. I’m not a Chinese food expert, but from an Asian person to another, I find no problem with their dishes. They were all good!”

“Amazing dimly lit and cozy atmosphere. The dumplings were okay but the noodles were delicious. We came around midnight on a Sunday in a pinch to find somewhere to eat and they were open and had seating available.”

“I think the menu needs improvement or a complete redesign. Way too salty for Chinese food lovers, but there needs to be more balanced flavors overall. I can see where they are going but there are easier ways. Okra was a highlight and I think they can build on this Chinese/Japanese fusion flavor profile. Staff were friendly and attentive but the decor and ambience was a bit all over the place. Overall good concept but a bit too heavy handed on seasoning and simple improvements can be made to make this place popular again.”

“it took me a while to finally try MCF because there are so many options in Chinatown. the interior is very nice and much more modern and elevated compared to the restaurants in the neighborhood. i tried a couple of dishes and everything was tasty but didn’t blow me away especially at the price point. most of the dishes can be found in other restaurants at probably half the cost with the same flavor. my favorite dish from the night was probably the mala soup dumplings.”
