The spice of India, the spirit of New York. Passerine is an Indian restaurant by 2023 Michelin Star awardee Chef Chetan Shetty. The seasonal menu is anchored by spice blends ground by Chef's mother in West India and produce from the nearby Union Square Greenmarket. Hundreds of bottles of wine comprise a wine list that pairs perfectly with the menu, led by our seasoned Wine Director, who happens to be Chef’s wife. With inviting bar seating and a ‘Drawing Room’ to enjoy bespoke cocktails and snacks. A lovely private dining room is also available.
“I had my birthday party with Passerine and it was incredible! The event coordinator McQueenie, all the waitstaff, our server Catie, the host and sommelier, every single person was absolutely amazing. Some of the best service I have ever received and the food was divine. I highly recommend the aloo dumplings and cabbage. They surprised me the most. The cook on all the meat was beyond perfect. The beef melted in my mouth and the chicken was perfectly tender. Chef Shetty is a genius. We had a 3 course prix fixe and they printed custom menus for me with my name in the header! That was a lovely souvenir for us to take home. Every dish was 10/10. Thank you Passerine for the best birthday! Passerine is vegetarian and halal friendly. They also have mocktails and teas for those that don't drink!”
“I had dinner at Passerine with friends and it was fantastic. The atmosphere has great vibes and is beautifully designed—warm, stylish, and inviting without feeling pretentious. The customer service was equally impressive; our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely helpful. One of the highlights was how accommodating they were with dietary restrictions. One of my friends has severe celiac disease, and we chose Passerine because of their reputation for being mindful about cross-contamination. Our waitress carefully guided us through the menu and made the experience feel safe and stress-free, which meant a lot. For three of us, we shared five dishes and one dessert, and everything was excellent. We ordered the Aloo Dumpling, Bedgi, Benne Chutney, Scallion Uttapam with aged Comté, Crispy Cauliflower with ginger and winter radish, and the Hamachi Crudo with tomatillo, avocado, and khakhra. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully balanced, and full of flavor. For dessert, the Pistachio Crémeux with chai and rose was the perfect finish—delicate, unique, and not too sweet. Overall, Passerine delivered on every level: food, service, atmosphere, and care. I’d absolutely return and highly recommend it, especially for anyone with dietary sensitivities looking for an elevated dining experience.”
“Another entry into the growing modern Indian food trend. I think Passerine skews a bit more fusion than authentic and the flavors are balanced but not exactly intense. The execution on all the dishes I tried was excellent but some just didn't taste like Indian food - grilled fish with a tomatillo sauce (tacos?), a korma that tasted mostly like creamed corn, etc. The breads served with the later courses are really good.”
“Really want to give them a perfect 5, but their service was painfully slow, consistent with what many Yelpers have mentioned on their reviews. Getting reservations was a breeze, and the layout remains the same at this place, what was formerly Priyanka Chopra's failed venture - Sona. Katie got us seated and George was our host/waiter - who was pretty difficult to spot throughout our time here. Now that I am done complaining about the service, lets quickly get to the food which was absolutely fantastic. What to get? The standout dish of the evening was Jackfruit Ghee Roast ($30) - the most delicious Jackfruit dish I have every had. Creamy, spice balanced, and flavor packed. This with Malabar Parotha was a banger combination. Market Beets ($20) stood out in small bites, thanks to the delicious walnut chikki, and the smoked mayo sauce with Kolhapuri Chicken Bao was really tasty. Roasted Bombay Corn Ribs ($12) can be skipped, and so can the Biryani Chicken Wings ($16). Their seasonal cocktail - a Gin & Tonic with cucumber and mint was refreshing. Cocktails overall were enjoyable. We tried all their desserts which include a pistachio icecream, gulab jamun with coriander, and icecream sandwich. Desserts overall were an absolute letdown and I wouldn't recommend any of them. If you have an absolute sugar craving, go with icecream sandwich! If they figure out their service staffing, I see no reason why Passerine can't be a New York favorite. With a gifted chef who balances flavor so well, the core ingredient of this restaurant is up to the mark!”
“Atmosphere was great love the room snd the vibe definitely well curated especially with no gaudy distracting art Service was great & attentive although would have liked some more guidance and descriptions on menu items as i found myself googling most of the words. Drink menu had nothing i felt compelled to order so I skipped a drink Food was mostly misses. Amuse was a nice bite but the chicken kofta meatballs were inedible could barely even get a fork in them they were so tough. Scallop uttapam taco thing was tasty and cool concept but lacked seasoning and texture. Even with caviar addition. Lack luster. The lamb cheela was the best bite of the night by far but difficult to cut & share Chicken bao had a ton of flavors but they were fighting each other instead of complimenting each other and there was little to no Protein in the bao making it s a disappointment . The Naan were both delicious and 10/10 but thats an easy one The scallop in coconut sauce was also a let down. The scallops were small and hard to find in a sea of delicious sauce which came in handy with the naan but we would have preferred having a second main or more food to balance the lack of proteins (server expertise could have come in handy here) We ordered 2 desserts. Gulab Jamen& ice cream sandwich Both were terrible , dry, flavorless and left no impact. Thankfully the grave pate fruit at the end of the meal scratched the need for a sweet treat.”
