Born in 1995, in an abandoned warehouse in SOMA, Basil was a project started by a group of young Thai artists, architects, DJ’s, & musicians who all had a love affair with Thailand. Their singular shared vision was to create a restaurant that captured the energy, vibrancy and allure of Bangkok, through food, space and music, one that did not conform to the standards. We continue on with the effort through our commitment to sourcing the best ingredients for our food and to draw from traditional, urban and progressive techniques to bring you the spirit of Bangkok in a bite. “I dream of this place. Best Thai food. Best drinks. Best bang for your buck. I typically come for lunch, and order drinks (happy hour lunch 11:30-2:30) and get the Ginger Drop or the Lychee cocktail. The soups are super flavorful I like they have a slightly smaller portion for one person reasonably priced! They can accommodate large groups or party of 1 like myself. Staff super friendly. My favorite place in SF right now.”

“Honestly, such a solid spot. The chicken spring rolls were the highlight—they have this super interesting, extra-crispy outer layer that’s way better than your average spring roll. Plus, the dipping sauce is literally to die for (perfectly sweet, hot, and sour). The tom kha was also super yummy. We asked to sub pork for ground chicken in the spicy fried rice, but there was a little mix-up and it came out with pork at first. Honestly, they were so nice about it—super apologetic, swapped it out for the chicken right away, and even gave us free Thai teas for the trouble. Great food and even better service. Definitely worth checking out!”

“Such a great vibe with good music and even better service! We had the pad kee mao, but the real standouts were the grilled pork skewers and the charcoal-grilled hanger steak. If you love meat, do not skip these. Already planning my next trip back!”

“From the moment you walk in it becomes a vibe. Music playing in the background. The bartender was busy making drinks. It was after 9:30 pm when I arrived. Tables were served and people appeared to be enjoying their beautifully presented food. We were sat and attended to quickly. I ordered the Thai-phoon, Thai tea w coocinut hints was not sweet but more of a rum tea flavor. The chicken spring rolls were perfectly crisp and loaded with chicken, the lettuce and herbs were the perfect touch. The pad Thai w loaded w chicken and tofu, light in color but flavor was in point. Fried tofu was crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside w the perfectly matched dipping sauce. The mango sticky rice, was delicious as well. I will definitely be returning”
