This Filipino owned and operated joint dishes out Filipino classics (lumpia, chicken adobo, sizzling sisig) and American fare (macaroni gratinee, burgers) with heart and soul. After spending eight years in the Marine Corps and another eight in the restaurant industry, Patrice Cleary opened her own restaurant to share her mother's recipes along with the comfort food enjoyed by her family. In a 2015 review, Tom Sietsema of the Washington Post demonstrates the restaurant's authenticity: "Staff at the Philippine Embassy come here for a taste of home." In 2023, Tom Sietsema listed Purple Patch as Restaurant of the Year in his annual Fall Dining Guide.
“This place has been on my list for a long while so I was very excited to finally try it last month; it was so good I came back a second time (and it absolutely won’t be my last)! Although a bit more pricey than your neighborhood Filipino restaurant, I would argue that it is worth it. Each dish is a memory of home and they definitely do it justice. The service staff were friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was lovely albeit cramped on the bottom floor. Nevertheless, I can’t wait to return, whether by myself or with a group of friends (or barkada).”
“Came here for dinner with my family and it was delicious! They had all been there before and spoke highly of it, but it was my first time (and my first time having Filipino food). The space itself is adorable, with multiple seating areas. Pretty large menu… it took us so long to decide what to order because everything sounded amazing. We had the lumpia and chicken wing appetizers, both of which were excellent. I had the pancit canton for my entree and it was huge and delicious! Plenty of leftovers for a second meal. My family had the adobo fried chicken, short rib, and ginger pork belly, and they all loved it. In my opinion the star of the show though was the ube cupcake and ice cream for dessert. It’s such a unique flavor!”
“Meal: Dinner Day Visited: Tuesday Budget: $50 Closest Station: Columbia Heights Reservation Needed?: Maybe Payment: Cash; Credit Kid Friendly?: Yes First time eating Filipino food outside of the Philippines and this place didn’t disappoint. We loved the fried rice and pork belly. The papaya salad was a bit uninspired, but not bad. The converted row house is well decorated. The seats at our table need to be replaced (or repaired), but we enjoyed everything else, including the good service.”
“My wife and I had reservations so there was no wait. Parking had its general city issues so plan ahead or use spot hero to secure a garage spot at a good price. The food was spectacular. The garlic rice is worth the upgrade and the short rib adobo was rich and savory. It did have a strong vinegar taste so if that’s not your preferred flavor profile, I recommend other dishes. The ube pancakes and lechón were definitely the star. The pancakes were fluffy and perfect sweet. The lechón was crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside. I am glad we tried the champurrado. Think rice crispy cereal with a rich chocolate sauce and condensed milk with coconut flakes. It was a hit too sweet for my liking but my wife loved it. We went during brunch so the restaurant had some loud tables but that’s to be expected. Service was okay and the food came out quickly.”
“The appetizers were good ( we got the fried eggplant and the eggrolls) but the pinneaple fried rice and the pork belly noodle bowl were incredibly underwhelming and lacking in taste. We were disappointed and surprised since the reviews are amazing and it was hard to get a reservation. Maybe it was our fault not getting the infamous fried chicken but all together disappointed.”
