Founded by former Ziegfield girl Helen Gallagher and the colorful gambler and sports enthusiast Jack Solomon, Gallaghers opened as a speakeasy and steakhouse in 1927. At that time, the height of Prohibition, a good stiff drink and a great steak were hard to find in New York – except, of course, at Gallaghers. New Yorkers come for the world-class cocktails and incredible steak – prime beef dry-aged for 21 days in Gallaghers’ legendary windowed meat locker. The combination of all-natural dry aging and cooking it to perfection over hickory coals makes for a steak unlike any other found in New York. Gallaghers’ guests are welcome in a wide variety of attire – from elegant casual to business suits. We respectfully request that you refrain from wearing hats, sports jerseys, tank tops and shorts.
“Excellent service from Connie and Pavel who explained the menu and answered our questions, sharing great recommendations on the steak options available (on and off menu) and portions. We got the rib eye on the bone with wedge salad (we got extra cheese sauce) and a lunch menu caeser salad, 8oz fillet mignon (lean but tender, + $22 supplement), key lime pie (custardy tart goodness). They also just added a special something as it was our anniversary. The chocolate lava cake with berries was also delicious and not too sweet. Yes a lot of tourists come here but it's still well worth coming for the quality food (especially the value lunch menu), NY steakhouse authentic vibes and just nice service. We didn't see stick to the regular lunch menu so it came to just over 190 but it was certainly worth it.”
“An authentic NYC steakhouse!! Great food, dry aged steaks you can see when you walk in the door. The place is always packed so it is best to make reservations. Ate at the bar which wasn't much of a wait to find a spot. Paul is a great bartender, definitely want to sit in his section! They have a great menu, our meal was excellent. They are worth the stop if you are in the area.”
“We came here for a special anniversary dinner, and Gallagher's absolutely lived up to the hype. The atmosphere is classic, old-school New York steakhouse perfection, from the meat lockers out front to the rolling carts in the dining room. The food was incredible from start to finish. We started raw with the steak tartare and steak carpaccio, both perfectly executed, along with a half-dozen oysters (the Rhode Island ones were remarkably crisp and briny). For the main event, the New York sirloin had that perfect hickory-smoke char from the open coals and was cooked beautifully rare. Do not skip the sides—the creamed spinach and garlic-spiked broccoli rabe were great, and the hash browns (recommended by our server) were shatteringly crisp. What really made the night memorable, though, was the service. We had the pleasure of being taken care of by Gregg and Chaz. Fine dining can sometimes feel stiff or intimidating, but they completely broke the ice. They were professional, sharp, and possessed incredible tableside dexterity, but they were also warm, engaging, and down-to-earth. They laughed with us, broke down the mechanics of their tableside serving grip like old friends, and even surprised us with a chocolate lava cake from the kitchen for our anniversary. It’s rare to find a place that balances world-class execution with genuine, unpretentious hospitality. We left incredibly full and very grateful. Can't recommend them enough.”
“We’ve visited a few times and usually sat at a table, but this time I walked in without a reservation and ended up at the bar and honestly, it was an amazing experience. Even though they were busy, the bartenders, Denny and Timothy, took such great care of us. I’ve lived in the U.S. for 12 years, and this is the first time in New York City I’ve felt this level of genuine attentiveness, especially as an Asian guest. It really stood out. If you go, you have to try the Hugo Spritz that is incredible. 👍🏼While this is known as a steakhouse, their cocktails are absolutely top-tier. There are many great steakhouses out there, but Gallagher’s truly stands out. The staff are professional, warm, and welcoming. From now on, I’d honestly come back just to sit at the bar with this team.”
“When in New York City, you’d be missing out on one of the best dining experiences if you don’t visit Gallagher’s. Our group dined in before seeing a show and it was excellent from start to finish. Our servers, Robert and Sal, were incredible. The entirety of our stay was filled with delicious food, tasty drinks and personable interactions with each staff member. The atmosphere was classic and invigorating. The flavors and delicacy of each dish were spot on. The Salmon Tartare and Spicy Tuna Poke were fresh and served to perfection. Each steak was cooked to order and paired with dishes such as creamed spinach and onion rings. I have yet to find a better onion ring; crispy, succulent and tender without the oily appearance and aftertaste. The Burrata Caprese and Clams Casino were out of this world. There aren’t words to describe the enjoyment we experienced while trying the Swordfish; its flavorful embodiment paired delectably with a glass of wine.”
