“Gjelina has been on Abbot Kinney since 2008 and it still operates with the unhurried authority of a place that knows exactly what it is. The building has no exterior signage worth mentioning, just a wood facade that you learn to recognize after a few visits or one careful Google Maps check. Inside there are communal tables down the center, a bar in the back, and a patio with a fire pit and a kitchen view that's the most sought-after seating on a warm evening. The whole place hums with that particular Venice energy that's casual and self-assured at the same time. The wood-fired pizzas are the thing everyone reaches for first and with good reason. Thin, crackly crusts with toppings that rotate seasonally, and the kind of blistered char on the edges that only comes from a properly hot wood oven and someone who knows when to pull it. We had one with roasted mushrooms and something herbaceous that worked beautifully, and the table agreement was it was one of the better pizzas we'd had anywhere in LA. The Tuscan kale salad with shaved fennel, radish, lemon, and ricotta salata is the salad that shows up at nearly every table and makes complete sense once you're eating it, bright and textured and genuinely satisfying rather than just virtuous. The roasted cauliflower is the vegetable dish that's been on the menu in various forms for years and keeps earning its place, deeply caramelized with a garlic and herb component that makes it the kind of side dish people remember. The duck confit when it's available is rich and properly rendered, one of those dishes where the kitchen's restraint with the seasoning makes the quality of the meat the whole story. Desserts are simple and good. Service is efficient and not fussy. The no-modifications policy is real and enforced. The menu communicates what it is. Going with what the kitchen is doing rather than against it is the way to have the best time here.”
“The food here is exceptional. We had two pizzas. The pomodora and salami are both recommended. Out of all the main courses, the scallops is one of the best. Vegetables are also very well cooked. Grilled asparagus and grilled brocolinni are seasoned with a sour taste. Black cod has a delicate taste, fresh, not very strong seasoning. I personally would prefer more flavoring but my friend liked it. Service overall is great, the staff here is very welcoming. It’s a little bit loud.”
“Very cute and vibey spot for dinner, with delicious and innovative food - we absolutely loved the sweet potatoes, the artichokes, the black cod, and the squash blossom pizza (the pizza was especially outstanding). The decor and the ambiance are lovely, perfect for date night or girls night out. Unfortunately we were delayed in getting seated (~30 mins late, despite having a reservation and arriving on time for it), which started us off on a poor note, and there were a few errors with our order (1 wrong dish and 1 dish never came) - that said, our server at the table was lovely / friendly and the team kindly offered complimentary desserts, which was appreciated (still worth keeping in mind there can be delays in getting seated even with a booking, so would suggest planning accordingly).”
“gjelina delivers on food quality and overall experience, but i'm docking it one star for a very specific reason: you absolutely cannot modify anything on the menu. not even a simple request like adding a side of basil to a pasta. for a restaurant of this caliber, that level of rigidity was surprising and a bit disappointing. just know going in that the menu is strictly “as is,” and manage expectations accordingly. that said, the food itself was good, flavorful, and clearly made with quality ingredients. the service was friendly and attentive overall, though they did forget to bring our drink order, which took away slightly from the experience.”
“I genuinely don’t understand the hype. Maybe I just have poor person taste buds, but this was nowhere near as good as the reviews make it sound. The lamb burger was decent, but definitely not worth the price. Everything else we ordered was underwhelming and honestly forgettable. For what you’re paying, I expected so much more. The service was just as disappointing as the food. It felt like no one cared whether you were there or not. It was slow, impersonal, and there was zero effort to make the experience enjoyable. The only positive thing I can say is that they finally got rid of the extra surcharge they used to tack onto the bill, so at least there’s that. I’m still not sure where all these glowing reviews are coming from because our experience didn’t match them at all. There are so many better places to eat in the area for less money. I wouldn’t go back.”
