“It was our first time staying here. The staff at the front desk is very kind and professional and was able to make suggestions as to where we should eat. The front lobby is amazing and breathtaking! We felt like we would see Al Capone walk down the stairs at anytime! Our room was very comfortable and clean. We had a slight issue with the thermostat in our room but the front desk was able to set our room temp for us from the lobby. There is plenty of dinning options and night life within walking distance too. We will definitely stay here again when back in town.”
“We booked a last minute trip for my birthday in Dubuque on a whim. The hotel was chosen on the history, beauty and tbh… the fact that it showed up on a google search under “haunted places to stay in Iowa”. Although I didn’t have any paranormal experiences here (lol), I DID have an exceptionally amazing stay! The staff was friendly, helpful and the manager and staff went above and beyond to help make my birthday extra special! They exceeded my expectations for a hotel… our room was scrupulously clean, the bed was VERY comfortable and every member of the staff that I encountered was friendly and helpful! I would definitely stay here again and will highly recommend this hotel to everyone I know!”
“I just can’t say enough good things about the staff and customer service here. I have stayed in so many hotels across the states and this by far IS THE BEST. We try to come visit and stay at this hotel once a year…tonight we had a little technical trouble with the online booking (I blame my phone) so I called the hotel and an ACTUAL HUMAN answered the phone, IMMEDIATELY - a true rarity in today’s times! The receptionist was SO, SO, SO VERY HELPFUL. We were able to book our annual mommy and daddy birthday-date-night in Dubuque thanks to her amazing help and dedicated assistance. We can’t wait to enjoy some AMAZING cocktails at their old fashioned and beautiful bar, soak in the historic ambience of the Hotel Julien, and wake up to the BEST breakfast at Caroline’s. Every time we come here it is a treat, we love the staff, we love the location, and we love the atmosphere of it all. WELL DONE, WELL DONE, WELL DONE!!! 👏👏👏👏👏”
“Old and historical. A little too dark but in relatively good condition (altho no luggage rack in the room - not sure if that's the norm). A little inconvenient to take one elevator to the main level & then go across the lobby for the actual hotel elevators. Location is excellent. Food is delish - and the bartender in the Riverboat Bar deserves a raise. Didn't get his name but he was working (by himself) tonite (Mar 31). Super personable, highly efficient, excellent beverage maker. Felt bad that he had to run across the lobby & down the stairs to pick up food orders while also attending his bar duties. Never lost his composure even when busy. Served everyone with a smile and efficiency. Good help is hard to find - hopefully the Riverboat appreciates and rewards him.”
“Very nice atmosphere and ambience. Greeted professionally by the front desk. Pool and hot tub area very nice. The luxury suite we stayed in was spacious and had a nice bathroom and living area. Location is close to local areas of interest. Had a great breakfast in Caroline’s and the server was very nice. We were disappointed in the size of the beds in the luxury suite, they were full size, very small. There are no microwaves in the room and they couldn’t assist us as they said didn’t have any, not even for their employees! (Except in the super luxury suites it seems). Since even the cheapest hotels around have microwaves in the rooms, it was a little bit surprising. The TVs only have local cable. They look like they’re from the 1990s. I can’t remember the last time I was in a hotel without a smart TV where you could use your Netflix, Hulu or Amazon account for movies! One of the Windows in the Room didn’t have its storm window and cold air just whistled through it. We were here during the last big snowstorm and there’s snow all over the window ledge. I’ve always wanted to stay in this hotel as it looked like such a nice part of Dubuque history and it was nice, but the items discussed above Would make me reconsider my choice.”
