“We first discovered Ricardo Sanz Wellington a few years ago and absolutely fell in love with it. Before Covid, it was always one of our favourite stops whenever we were in Madrid — elegant, vibrant, and consistently memorable. Returning this time, with our Japanese cousins for dinner, we were genuinely excited to revisit what had once been such a special place for us. Sadly, the experience was deeply disappointing. What was once a lively and refined restaurant felt almost abandoned: around 80% of the space was closed off and left in darkness, creating a rather strange and unwelcoming atmosphere. There was no wine-by-the-glass list offered, which felt surprising for a restaurant of this standing. Even more disappointing, there seemed to be no cooked dishes available, leaving the menu extremely limited. But the greatest letdown was the sushi and sashimi themselves. Quite honestly, it was among the most underwhelming Japanese meals we have ever had — lacking the freshness, precision, and care that had once made this place so exceptional. It is always sad to return to a restaurant you once loved only to find that the magic has disappeared. We left not only disappointed, but genuinely puzzled at how dramatically things had changed.”
