“Had a great experience at Basil Leaf last night. Our group of 7 was a little rowdy (celebrating friends in town) and loud. The server was so gracious and kind to us even as we changed seats, added to our order multiple times, had friends going in and out, etc. The happy hour specials were affordable and delicious! We will definitely be back.”

“Never have any complaints when I come here. Food is rich and yummy without being too pretentious. Quiet atmosphere and attentive staff. I live in Johnson Viunty and it’s worth the drive to have something that’s not a chain.”

“Our server Grace was awesome! She was so kind and charismatic. I got the grilled cheese, crab cakes, cinnamon Italian cream soda, and cajun penne. They were so tasty and the atmosphere was alive.”

“This was my second trip here. The food is pretty good. I had the tortellini ala vodka and a Caesar salad. Both were done very well. I also had a pineapple Italian cream soda but I wasn't super fond of that. It's a little pricey imo for the caliber of the food they serve. All in all it's a decent place to dine. Be advised that it's best to have a reservation on Friday and Saturday nights as it can get pretty busy.”

“After suffering through "the taste of Lawrence" during KU graduation 2026, we FINALLY had the pleasure of a good fine dining experience. Lawrence , the ultimate college town, is loaded with substandard restaurants and is a culinary wasteland. However, The Basil Leaf Cafe was actually really good. The Cajun pasta was enormous and flavorful, high marks. The steak over salad was actually the best--steak done perfectly to order over a bed of greens, for those cutting the carbs---this is awesome, The steak special-"Surf and Turf" left something to be desired---small KC strip with miniscule shrimp. The steak ordered medium came overdone and I wasn't in the mood to send it back. Overall----a Good B+ experience after horrible meals the previous three days. My hats off to Manager Brooke who was not only a top notch server but I found out later--was The Manager and she runs a fabulous staff. She supplies great positive motivation and it's truly a happy crew even after a long day. Ava, Hadley, Kyleigh are all serving stars---and Sadee was terrific behind the bar. Great job ladies ! Drinks were well made and the wine was at an excellent price point.”
