“We love coming here for special occasions! The food, atmosphere, and service are always wonderful. You must have the French onion soup. My husband and I have tried numerous soups elsewhere and theirs still remains the best. The sauce with the scallops is chefs kiss. I had the special seared sea bass with pesto mashed potatoes, so refreshing! My husband had the filet which was phenomenal with the sauce and Boursin cheese. Dessert drinks and a seasonal strawberry, rhubarb tart was the perfect ending to our meal!”

“We came here because my daughter leaves for a study abroad program in Provence in two weeks, and it felt only right to send her off with a proper French dinner. Café Provence took that assignment very seriously. I had the grouper special with Daniel’s potato gratin and broccolini, and honestly, I’m still thinking about it. The fish was so perfectly cooked—flaky, buttery, and fresh without needing to try too hard—and the potato gratin was the kind of rich, creamy, golden-edged comfort food that makes you briefly consider abandoning all personal health goals. I also had a Long Island iced tea and a dirty martini. The Long Island did its job admirably, and the martini was excellent, though I personally would have welcomed a little more olive chaos. I also sampled everyone else meal and took notes ion my iphone. Here are my thoughts: My uncle ordered the veal scaloppini with lemon butter caper sauce and a Caesar salad. The veal was tender, the sauce was bright and buttery with just enough acidity from the capers, and the whole plate felt classic in the best way—not fussy, just really well executed. One of my daughters had the Amish chicken with morel brandy cream sauce, which may have been one of the sleeper hits of the table. The chicken was perfectly juicy, and that sauce was ridiculous—earthy, silky, rich, and the kind of thing you absolutely mop up with bread when no one’s looking (or when everyone is). My other daughter ordered the goat cheese soufflé, which arrived looking suspiciously delicate for something that packed that much flavor. Light, airy, creamy, tangy, and somehow still satisfying enough to count as a full entrée. It was one of those dishes that makes you immediately regret not ordering it yourself. My fiancé had the Caesar salad and the salmon with pistachio butter, risotto, and blackberry coulis. I realize that combination sounds like someone lost a bet in the kitchen, but somehow it absolutely worked. The salmon was cooked perfectly, the pistachio butter added richness without overwhelming anything, and the blackberry coulis gave just enough sweetness to keep it interesting. My aunt had an entrée that I unfortunately cannot remember because somewhere between cocktails and dessert, my note-taking standards collapsed—but I do know she thoroughly enjoyed it. We ordered escargot for the table. I did not personally participate because I’m still emotionally processing the concept of eating snails, but everyone else loved them. Dessert was shared family-style because we are civilized people with self-control issues. The maple crème brûlée was smooth and deeply flavorful with that perfectly crackly top that everyone secretly fights over. The tarte Tatin was warm, buttery, caramelized perfection, and the French cheese board made us all feel significantly more sophisticated than we actually are. Despite my uncles protest, we also shared the cheese with our cowboy corgi when we got home and she loved it too. We sat outside, which was lovely, but reservations are absolutely a must. We booked about a week in advance, and judging by how busy they were, that was the right call. Our server, whose name I sadly cannot remember, was fantastic—attentive without hovering, friendly without being over the top, and somehow always appeared exactly when needed. The entire meal for five adults, two teenagers, cocktails, appetizers, dessert, and tip came to just over $460, which honestly felt fair for how good everything was. Excellent food, wonderful atmosphere, and the perfect sendoff before Provence!”

Their commitment to local farmers and artisanal purveyors mirrors exactly what makes French cuisine special—that reverence for fresh, seasonal ingredients transformed through technique and tradition. One bite of their Terrine de Foie Gras, and my friend stops mid-sentence, closes his eyes, and whispers "C'est comme chez nous" (It's like home). The Pavé de Saumon and Les Coquilles Saint-Jacques are executed with the kind of precision that would make my Parisian chef friends nod in approval rather than launch into their usual tirades about American interpretations. “Café Provence is one of the best French restaurants in the Kansas City metro area. Nestled in the Village Shops in Prairie Village, this charming spot truly captures the essence of a Parisian café. While the indoor seating is intimate, the outdoor patio is spacious and beautifully arranged, complete with umbrellas and heaters that make dining al fresco a delightful experience year-round. Although we’ve occasionally walked in, reservations are highly recommended due to the limited seating. There is a 90-minute table limit, especially on weekends, which can feel a bit rushed—particularly for a $$$–$$$$ meal—but it’s understandable given the cozy size of the restaurant. Bar seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The service is friendly and attentive, and the food is consistently impeccable. The wine list is thoughtfully curated, perfectly complementing the menu. Overall, Café Provence is a must-visit—ideal for date nights or small gatherings. Highly recommend!”
