MEET THE WINEMAKER: To winemaker Jason Joyce, the allure of crafting wine is in its ability to be both art and science, with room for spontaneity, exploration, and freedom of expression. Feeling stifled by the restrictions of his early scientific career, Jason was captivated by the process of making wine as a way to blend deeper human experience into his everyday life. Starting at Calcareous as a harvest cellar hand under Australian winemaker Daniel Shaw, with council from Daniel’s father, winemaker Philip Shaw, Jason learned to craft small batch, high-quality wine, ultimately advancing to become head winemaker at Calcareous Vineyard in 2010. “This is a project I passionately believe in. The estate vineyard is the highest quality and represents a unique fusion of soil and climate. I am given complete freedom in the cellar to bring the fruit from vine to glass in whatever manner produces the best possible expression of our place.” OUR STORY: In an effort to produce the highest quality, terroir-driven wines possible, father and daughter Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown planted their vineyard atop 342 acres of solid calcareous rock reaching 1,700 feet above sea level. It is a labor of love to cultivate fruit on this challenging land, but the reward is immediately apparent when savoring the award-winning results. Lloyd passed on in 2006, but Dana continues to advance their vision as Calcareous consistently produces a collection of world-class Rhône and Bordeaux wines that speak with an undeniable sense of place.

“Well if you want to be wowed or want to impress others, you need to go to Calcareous! The ride there is beautiful and you will think you missed the place but keep going. When you are near, the signage is great. The incredible views will take your breath away as you open your car door. Reservations are suggested and you will be handed your first tasting as you are seated. The red and white wines are all wonderful. The service and food are outstanding and you will pay handsomely for this one of a kind experience. We can’t wait to go back especially for the “best ever” tiramisu”
“Calcareous Vineyard offers a lovely experience with its stunning views and inviting atmosphere, both inside and outside. Busy winery! We enjoyed our time under the umbrellas, soaking in the picturesque landscape while indulging in their excellent white wine. The service was attentive and friendly, enhancing our visit. Additionally, the lunch menu was appealing, with delicious options that perfectly complemented the wines. We shared the burger and Cobb salad. Overall, it's a wonderful spot to relax, taste great wines, and enjoy a nice meal amidst beautiful surroundings!”
“We very much enjoyed the wines, food (we just had apps and sides), and a quick tour. But REALLY the wines and the views were incredible! And Gabe took great care of us. I might not have gone if the sommelier at Papas Bros Steakhouse in Dallas hadn't recommended it. I'm so glad he did! And that I joined the wine club to keep enjoying it at home.”
“We found this vineyard on Google, and while the reviews were a bit sparse, I am so glad we took the chance! The drive up the winding road is absolutely worth it—once you hit the top, the panoramic views are breathtaking. 😍 The service was excellent. Our server, Phil, was impressive, relatable, and clearly knew his way around the wines and the history of the vineyard. The wine itself was fantastic; we liked it so much we brought a few bottles home. My only feedback would be the food menu. I’d love to see a few more selections added. I ordered a salad but it was served without dressing, which was a bit of a letdown. I would have easily given this a 5-star rating if the menu had a bit more variety and attention to detail. Still, it's a must-visit for the views and the wine!"”
