Castle & Coal is a baked good shop tucked away on Dovercourt Rd. And Queen Street West that specializes in French and British comfort pastries and desserts.
“First time trying Kouign Amann buns. They are fabulous. I give this bakery a 10 on these absolutely delicious pastries. Eat them right away, with a cup of their smooth and aromatic coffee. Another of life's peak experiences.”
“Castle & Coal is one of the standout bakeries in West Queen West, offering an incredible lineup of refined French-style pastries in a cozy neighbourhood setting. Their cannelé is a must-try!! perfectly caramelized on the outside with a soft, custardy center. It really showcases the level of craft behind everything they make. A great place to satisfy your cravings on a daily, or hangout with friends on weekends.”
“We came here because so many people rave about their canele, and it was actually really good! The best I've had in Toronto thus far and it's difficult to even find ones that are half decent, so this is a huge win! Their kouign-amann, the modernized version, is also the best one we've had in Toronto so far. Very nice caramelized sugar flavour with a semi-moist inside. They have their own merch, even freezer baked goods so you can enjoy them fresh in the comfort of your own home, and cute jelly cats (for display only).”
“Strawberry kouign-amann was amazing like spectacular and the canéles were amazing best I've had. Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting was good but not the best and the chive cheese scone is a hard skip, too dry overall very well rated and reviews align well with overall taste. Overall definitely worth a try! Total cost: $50”
“Stopped by on the weekend since I was in the area. Grabbed a few items to go, including the popular canelé. Definitely one of the best canelés in the city! The Sausage Roll was a tad too salty for my preference, but it is essentially a whole link wrapped in pastry. The sauce that came with it kind of helped, but overall it was pretty heavy. Very small space with a little bit of seating, but I was just there for grab and go, so wasn't a problem. Right when you walk in, the display case of baked goods right in front of you so you can decide while you walk a few steps to the order/pay area. They also have some fridges and freezers with other food items that you can purchase. The staff are friendly and helpful with recommendations.”
