Sausal's Nuevo Rancho Cuisine pulls history forward by blending traditional Hispanic ingredients with contemporary farmers market fare. The menu borrows inspiration from the foundational elements of Rancho cooking: wood fire, smoke, and slow-roasting; it celebrates the bold flavors of Mexican cuisine in combination with the elemental flavors of Spain (citrus, olives, figs); and just as importantly, it revels in the bounty of contemporary California.
“Came here to celebrate a 90th birthday party and we had a large group. We did Party reservation with a specific menu for us,which offered Pollo Con Arros,Shrimp Salad and Barbacoa Tacos, also a specific kids menu which served Fish Tacos and my kids really enjoyed them.I got the Shrimp Salad ,shrimps were huge and flavorful, The salad had some kind of pesto sauce with pistachios on it ,which made it very delicious.I also had an agua fresca watermelon flavor, oh and the toastadas were freshly made and their salsa was amazing! The only thing I didn't like is I ordered a cocktail from the bar and it cost $33. That was the same amount as my plate which I think is very expensive.”
“I recently ate at Sausal, and it was truly some of the most delicious Mexican food I’ve ever eaten. The kitchen perfectly captures that "Nuevo Rancho" style with a mix of deep, smoky notes and bright, coastal ingredients. The Standout Dishes Arrachera Tacos: These were the star of the show. The smoky flavors in the beef were unbelievable—you get that authentic char from the wood fire that makes the steak incredibly savory and tender. Coconut Ceviche: This was an absolute delight. The coconut added a subtle, creamy sweetness that balanced the citrus perfectly. It felt unique, refreshing, and high-end.”
“I usually don't leave reviews unless I either loved a place or want to warn other people about a place. With Sausal, it's definitely the former. With the new American Express Platinum refresh, I now get $100 a quarter to spend at any Resy restaurant. We decided to finally check out Sausal, intrigued by their menus online and, specifically, their coconut flan. Well... Color us extremely impressed! The food was on the slightly pricier side, but it was VERY good and very filling. Every dish we tried was delicious and had substance - it honestly was way more filling than I thought just looking at it. My short rib quesabirria tacos had sooo much meat, and the consomme was amazing. So were the rice and beans. Kiddo ordered a pork shank dish that was super flavorful and came with tortillas, rice, and black beans. They were nice enough to put the chipotle crema on the side too since he's still learning to tolerate spicy food. Partner ordered the cashew mole dish and that, again, was SO good. The happy hour drinks were bomb too, I loved the vamos a la playa. And again, the drinks had substance... They weren't watered down at all. The coconut flan... That thing was so good we immediately began thinking about bringing them for family gatherings 🤤 it was perfect. We'll definitely be going back again and again!”
“Excellent Happy Hour menu with food and drinks. Great for groups and very nice space as well. There is street parking and some lots nearby so parking can take some time. The standout dish for me was the Ceviche. It’s not on the HH menu but so unique and delicious with coconut cream giving it a tropical vibe. All the tacos are great too and my favorite is the Al Pastor. Service was nice and quick also. Good place to check out and would love to come back!”
“I took my wife to Sausal for her birthday and overall we had a good experience. The service was great, easily 10/10. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made the dinner enjoyable from start to finish. The ambiance of the restaurant was also really nice — modern, relaxing, and perfect for a birthday dinner date. It had a great atmosphere without feeling too loud or crowded. We started off with the guacamole and tostadas. The guacamole was honestly 10/10 — fresh, flavorful, and probably one of the best parts of the meal. The tostadas, however, were very salty and kind of overpowered the flavor. To drink, I ordered the authentic Mexican Coke — can’t really go wrong with that. My wife ordered an agua fresca de jamaica and it was also very good and refreshing. The food itself could’ve been a little better. Coming from a Mexican family, spicy flavor is always part of the meal. Authentic Mexican food usually has some type of chile or salsa that brings everything together. My wife is a big pozole fan, and while she said the pozole was really good, it definitely needed more chile and lemon to give it that authentic kick. She couldn’t finish it there and ended up taking it home so she could add hot sauce herself. I ordered the Crispy Shrimp Diablo, and I will say the presentation of the dish was beautiful. According to the description, it comes with a spicy chipotle sauce, jicama slaw, and mint. When you hear a name like “Diablo,” especially as someone familiar with dishes like camarones a la diabla, you expect something spicy and full of flavor. The shrimp itself was good, but the dish leaned more sweet than spicy, and you could barely taste the chipotle. It felt toned down compared to what the description and name suggest. Overall, the experience, service, drinks, and ambiance were excellent, but the food could’ve used a little more authentic spice and boldness to really match the flavors Mexican food is known for.”
