JUA (joo-ah) is one-of-a-kind Korean wood-fire restaurant by chef Hoyoung Kim. Chef Kim is a former executive chef of two-Michelin-starred Jungsik in Tribeca. JUA is the chef's gift to his firstborn daughter Jua whose name signifies "joie" in French. The restaurant utilizes a variety of wood-fire techniques to present an original 7 course tasting menu.
“JUA is my favorite set menu in the city; and potentially my favorite restaurant in the city. Every occasion and celebration somehow routes me back here. I have been here four times at this point; and every time has felt like a discovery and just a sensational experience. Most prix fixe menus in New York are plagued with underwhelming portion issues, and inconsistent quality amongst dishes. Everything at JUA feels seasonal and inspired and put together with as much regard for the art of it all as for the taste. I feel like each time I come I change my mind about my favorite dish; I tend to vacillate between the Kim and the Jook. I could honestly take down a gallon of that rice porridge. And multiple times, we have resigned ourselves to ordering additional caviar kims! I love the seasonal quality and harmony that binds the dishes; and the smart way in which the menu balances heavy and light, acidic and savory, fresh and tart with syrupy and starchy. JUA deserves every commendation it gets.”
“Jua was on my list for some time and I’m so happy that I had the opportunity to dine here this winter. Every dish was better than the next with the Lamb & Chan being the standout of the night. I love a good banchan moment, so I really enjoyed their elevated take. The atmosphere is much more relaxed than I imagined. Great for a causal date night (if you’re splurging) or a special occasion. There was tons of birthday and anniversary celebrations going on the night we dined. The meal was memorable. I’d definitely come back to try another seasonal menu.”
“Been wanting to visit for a while and finally got a reservation on a week night. Make sure you make a reservation in advance! The staff were all friendly and welcoming. I loved the relaxing ambiance and the dim lights. It was a six course menu starting from my favorite caviar Kim and uni Kim. The nori wrapper was so crispy and matched well with the abundance of caviar and uni. The caviar Kim had a kick of jalapeño. Uni was from Hokkaido and worth the additional price. The jook had so much flavor and foie gras wasn’t too overpowering. The branzino was great with the leek and cream sauce with a crispy skin. The lamb was very soft and moist, with a great chimichuri sauce and other banchans. The sticky donut with black sesame was also great. Everything was unique and detailed. I’m glad we got to try it. I do feel like there was a longer wait time between each dish, not sure if that was to time it with other guests or it was just the way they served but given each dish was on the smaller side compared to the other Michelin starred restaurants I’ve visited, it could’ve been timed shorter”
“We celebrated a birthday dinner here and it was a fantastic evening from start to finish. The service was attentive and warm, and the food delivered consistently throughout the night. What makes this place special is how the chef reimagines traditional Korean ingredients in an elevated, creative way without losing the essence of the flavors. The kimchi ceviche was a standout — a genuinely brilliant combination that worked on every level. The branzino was cooked to perfection, incredibly tender and delicate. And to end the night, the sweet potato donut was the kind of dessert that stays with you warm, subtly sweet, and full of depth. If you're looking for a special occasion spot that actually lives up to the occasion, this is it. Highly recommend!!!”
“JUA offers a modern and thoughtful Korean tasting menu in an intimate, contemporary setting. There were so many highlights throughout the meal: the caviar Kim opened with decadent, punchy flavors, followed by the Uni Kim with deep umami and crisp seaweed. The mulhoe ceviche was refreshing with a good kick, and the abalone jook was hearty and comforting, if a bit risotto-like. The smoked branzino was a standout - rich, crispy-skinned, and served in a smoky, zesty broth - and the lamb with banchan delivered a fun mix of flavors and inventive sides. Dessert also ended things on a high with a bright mandarin–yuzu ice cream and a chewy, deeply satisfying goguma juak. Overall, the meal was beautifully composed and thoroughly enjoyable.”
