KJUN started as a COVID pop-up in Chef Jae Jung’s bathtub-sized apartment kitchen. After a celebrated career in both NOLA and NYC, Jae set out on her own and began building KJUN with techniques and recipes developed over more than a decade working in fine-dining kitchens. This is KJUN’s first permanent location, opened in Fall 2022.
“I’ve passed by Kjun so many times since it’s near my place, and I’ve also heard great things from friends, so I finally tried it for dinner yesterday. It honestly exceeded my expectations. Every dish we ordered was amazing. David was especially wonderful, he was so kind and walked us through the menu, explaining what to order and what to expect from each dish. It really elevated the whole dining experience. It’s hard to pick a favorite because everything was so good, but if I go back, I’d definitely order the galbi grits and the okra kimchi tomato again. Can’t wait to try more of the menu!”
“I love this place. The food itself is probably 4 stars but the warm service and cozy space (original location) and general feel good factor bumps it up for me. Amuse bouche: a very flavorful bite of squash Green tomato kimchi: got this because it sounded different and it was INSANELY good. Smoky, not too sour, nice “soft” crunch on the tomatoes, omg we were obsessed Potato and daikon salad: just like a potato salad but with more crunch and lightness Cod beignets: what’s the difference between a beignet and a fritter? Idk but I would’ve called these cod fritters but they were incredible. Very crisp fry but the cod inside was super tender and juicy. Loved this with the wasabi sauce Fried chicken: just a very solid chunk of fried chicken. Well worth $9 to us Kimchi jambalaya: not a bad dish by any means but didn’t wow us. It felt too same-y throughout the dish and the only distinguishing pieces were the sausage bits Galbi brisket and grits: on the other hand this was a flavor BOMB at the start but by the end it was too heavy. Absolutely delicious and cheesy. Wish there’d been even more tomato and daikon in it to break up the richness - I guess that’s what the sides are for but we’d already scarfed those down by the time this came Pecan tart: good if nothing to write home about. Bit too hard/firm and when we cut it it shattered across the table lol. Nice way to end the meal”
“Took myself on a solo date night to the Lexington location. Quaint Interior design to go with the NOLA vibe. Food was incredible, flavorful, dynamic. Service ON POINT. Shout out to the bartender Lisa! Sweet as pie & knows how to make a banger of a drink! Here’s what’s I ordered: ALL by MYSELF - Dinner for one. Individual portions of your choice of one snack, two sides, one main, and dessert. Starter: Soy Marinated Eggs Sides: Green Tomato Kimchi & Collard Greens Main: BBQ pork ribs Dessert: strawberry yummy && TWO yummy rum punch drinks! I will for sure be back! 🫶🏽”
“Joyeux Mardi Gras! Purposely came here on this day to have some New Orleans style food with a unique, Asian twist to it (my attempt at paralleling it with the Lunar New Year which is also today). The place itself looks small but is slightly larger than it feels for you can get decent enough seating space for about 12 people and the restaurant itself was half filled when I came in. Service was definitely spot on and attentive, props to the one waiter and the cooking crew in the back. I did say the place itself was relatively small so the kitchen can easily be seen within a distance. Didn't have to wait long for my Shrimp Po'Boy and Gumbo along with Root Beer to come up. The Po'Boy sandwich was played well along with 2 toothpick flags of the KJUN logo on each side and the Gumbo was so fresh, you can still see the steam rise slowly from it. The dish itself was as delectable as it was palatable. Po'Boys hit so good, the assortment of different Korean garnishes inside the sandwich give it an intriguing taste added to it. The Gumbo was also so hearty and a delight to eat. Root Beer, was standard fare but it was something I could find in a supermarket so it was something to wash down my food. I enjoyed my time here, granted I can't do it often because this is one of the more pricey end restaurants but I would definitely revisit soon enough.”
“Hands down one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. Thank you to David and the staff for providing such a wonderful meal and memory. The blackened catfish bites were succulent and the perfect level of spicy. The two mains, galbi w/ gritz and ribs were tender, savory, and sweet. The dessert, pecan pie, was the perfect cherry on top to finish the meal. Incredible atmosphere, top notch food, and a properly warm and inviting team of staff make this restaurant a true Diamond in the Rough.”
