The Black Horse Pub is an American restaurant in the Mendham neighborhood of Mendham.
“The weather was gorgeous so we elected to have a lovely lunch outside on the patio. I was pleasantly surprised that the menu was so comprehensive & varied. The steak frites was recommended so I selected it…it was very tasty, although next time I would hold back the caramelized onions on to of the steak & request an au poivre sauce versus the hollandais. I enjoyed a couple of glasses of the Whitehall Sauvignon blanc…but noted that the wine list was a bit lacking & could easily be upgraded. My wife enjoyed her salad & my daughter loved her grilled chicken!”
“The Black Horse Inn never disappoints. It’s exactly what you would expect in the scenic Mendham countryside. The team is very friendly. The libations are expertly crafted right down to big square ice cubes for the Old Fashioned’s. The 1742 burger is a taste bud orgasm. Caroline took great care of me. Treat yourself and your family and go there today. God Bless America! God Bless Blue and Gold! Remember Everyone Deployed Everyday!”
“I was really hyped up to see the oldest tavern open in NJ and experience the history of the place. It's a beautiful spot but it feels very modern inside. That could be due to a recent remodel from a fire. It just doesn't feel historical tavern to me inside. Seemed like it was decorated by Hobby Lobby. The food was really good, The dry aged burger lives up to the good reviews. Drinks were very good and the service was very friendly. I travel to many historical taverns all over the US and Black Horse just isn't showing that off unfortunately. Maybe I missed it. I would give it a 2nd chance. Dobbins House in Gettysburg PA and 1776 House in NY scream historical tavern.”
“Ate here last night to use our quarterly Amex credit. Supposedly (no reason to doubt it) the oldest operating restaurant in the state. Much more modern inside than expected but still very nicely done. Great atmosphere/ambiance although a little loud. Menu is a good mix of upscale pub food mixed with some more substantial entrees. Overall food was very good. I had the 1794 burger which was excellent and worth the extra price (my son had the regular burger so I had a basis to compare, although his was good too). Wife had the fish and chips and my other son had the sliced steak. I thought fish was excellent and steak very good. I’d definitely return. No real complaints. Beer menu was moderate in size. Didn’t try any wines and we skipped dessert. Price points reasonable with our family of four getting beer for the adults, apps and salad/soup all around plus the mains came in at $200. Apps were all good. We tried the Nashville Mozz, Caesar salad, bread and French onion soup.”
“The Black Horse Tavern and Pub offers a cozy, classic atmosphere with its vaulted ceilings, plenty of booths and tables for groups, and a warm fireplace that made the room feel inviting. Even on a Monday, the bar area had a solid crowd and good energy. The bar has a small, but good selection of locally brewed craft beers. We tried a few apps—chips and guac, plus mozzarella and meat—and while everything was perfectly fine, nothing particularly stood out. The fish and chips had good flavor, but the crispy exterior didn’t hold up by the time it reached our group of nine, arriving a bit soggy. The tartar sauce could’ve used more dill to brighten things up. Overall, it was still a pleasant experience. The service and atmosphere carry the place, and we’d definitely give it another try.”
