An ever changing menu, of the best things we can get our hands on each day from the farmers and fishers we call friends, in a casual laid back setting, with reasonably loud music. Also we love run on sentences.
“So many incredible choices it was hard to pick! The tuna pastrami particularly wowed me but everything I tried was incredible, the chef really treats the balance of flavours and textures as an art piece with each dish. The cocktails were also great, flavours were well balanced and unique without heavy boozy flavours. The vibe in here was fun and uplifting, the staff were great with menu navigation, questions, recommendations, and good vibes. My favourite dinner in the city so far!”
“Really enjoyed the “Let Us Choose” six-course menu 👍Loved everything, especially the mussels and the salmon. The salmon’s cauliflower-based sauce was excellent, and the mussels were super fresh. Will definitely come back. The only small thing is the air circulation near the open kitchen could be better. Other than that, the food is really good — highly recommended👍👍👍”
“I first visited Hanks in 2014 (give or take) and have been back for every special event they have done, as well as bi monthly visits just for whatever is currently on the menu. The menu, by the way, is always changing and is always fascinating. Although there is a definite tendency towards things Beef and Pork related from their beginnings as Hanks Untraditional BBQ, there is something for nearly everyone and lots of it. Its rarely the same food twice as they may change their menu daily to match whatever fresh vegetables, fish, and meat that they get their hands on. If you want a truly unique experience, you need to go here. I don't know why you aren't making a reservation right now. These pictures are from our last trip when i was trying to be mostly vegetarian due to new dietary restrictions... My friend was definitely enjoying his share of red meat though. Just visited again for another delicious offering before they end up closing down to move to their new location sometime soon. In keeping with my new diet, I found the best dishes tonight were the vegetable based ones. Everything was colorful, flavorful, and tremendously interesting, as always. This week I returned yet again to visit Hanks (like almost every week) to test the food under the new management of Sous Chef Mark, now the new master chef at Hanks. I erased a few old pictures to add some new ones of the slight changes to an Asian/Thai influence on the 4 dishes I tried. I liked the new creations and was happy to see all the old favorites were still there.”
“I think with a few small changes this place could be amazing. As it is though, the server didn’t know several items on the menu, the menu is extremely confusing and missing things like what items are served over what (and is not organized by style of dish at all), and there’s nothing to modify dishes with on the table. The dishes are creative and interesting in terms of ingredients, and I could see the potential in all, but most were too salty or poorly seasoned to be enjoyable. The fried rice was quite excellent though; it could’ve used more ginger yet overall somewhat redeemed the rest of the meal, and while salty it was in the comfortable range for that. There was also a food quality issue that they apologized for. I get that that happens, yet as my eating buddy said, we wouldn’t have minded if the food that had an accidental extra item with it had been delicious. The ambiance and tables dont fit the menu or price. The lemon verbena mocktail tasted like a cough drop… yet a decently delicious liquid cough drop?”
“I’m going to start with the service which was awful. The waitress took our food order when we sat down and proceeded to never speak to us again. After an hour of trying to get her attention to order more, we resigned ourselves to asking for the check when she finally decided to see us. The food is slightly above average. The individual parts of each dish work but nothing ties them together. This feels like a test kitchen more than a restaurant. The spot itself is charming but I would definitely pass on this place.”
