Nominated for Best New Restaurant and Best Chef in the James Beard Awards, Gado Gado is an Indonesian-focused restaurant in Portland’s Hollywood neighborhood serving an eclectic menu that derives flavors from owners Thomas and Mariah Pisha-Duffly’s cultural heritage, travels, and culinary backgrounds. In addition to an extensive à la carte food and drink menu, groups are invited to indulge in a bountiful family-style, chef’s choice Rice Table dinner — Gado Gado’s interpretation of the Dutch-Indonesian “Rijsttafel” feast.
“For parties over a certain amount they require you to have a prix fixe menu. There are alternatives for those with dietary restrictions. But I would like to try and order from menu next time I am there. The food as really good and they were very packed on a Tuesday evening. That said a lot to me. The dessert was so delicious. It’s fried banana or plantain with cheese and coconut. Whole this may sound an odd combination, it is delicious!”
“Keith Lee sent me here and he did not disappoint. Every dish we ordered hit the spot. Start with the scallop crudo, roti canai, and siu-mai. Each one is packed with flavor and worth ordering. Service was excellent. The staff brought out a complimentary kids plate for our 1 year old without us asking. 10/10 experience. Make a reservation before you go.”
“I had the absolute best meal and phenomenal service here at Gado Gado on Saturday April 25. I sat at the bar and had the amazing pair of Jasmine and Travis take care of me. The were attentive, kind and great conversationalists. Now for the food. I got the Roti with the blistered cherry tomato curry that should be sold in its own. Jarred and shipped across the country in fact. It’s Sunday as I write this and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. I also got the chicken satay which was also mind bending flavorful. I went in not very hungry so the à la carte menu was perfect for me!! Can’t wait to come back the next time I’m in Portland!”
“I leave a lot of reviews and I wish I could find a way to emphasize this one. I absolutely love this place. The food was some of the best I've had. We ordered the rice table which is like a taster menu option. I would highly recommend this approach. There was not a single thing brought to the table that was not absolutely amazing! Tried to get pictures of most of it. I was in town visiting family and regret that this is not a place I can frequent. I would highly highly recommend checking this place out!”
“Overall my food was great. The flavors were there, the spices were there and they had great customer service. However, once I came back to my hotel and heated up my to go food/ leftover I did see a hair that wasn’t mine in my Roti. A hair that wasn’t mine. The food was great but that did deter me from returning. Making sure everyone in the kitchen’s hair is tied up or anyone wrapping up your Togo food should be important. I wanted to give this place 5 stars so bad but now that I can’t eat the remainder of my roti I paid for because of a piece of hair it’s frustrating. But the food is great. The service is good, but I would pack my own food to go.”
