“I’m in Pittsburg for a conference and had a beautiful stroll along Point State Park Fountain. Around 8ish after watching the sunset I wanted something on the lighter side and slightly elevated. To my surprise this was a 15 min walk from the park along the water. Once I got to the restaurant, I had no idea how posh and vibey the restaurant was. I read reviews talking about how hard it was to get a reservation, but on a Tuesday at 8pm, I was seated by the hostess immediately. I had 7 different hand rolls and all of them were DELICIOUS. At affordable price points (although the urchin one was a bit more expensive). I can’t believe how I happened upon this place so organically. I have a yearly trip here in Pittsburgh and will be back each time!”
“Genuinely my favorite food spot in all of Pittsburgh, but certainly needs treated as a rare treat unless you've got ample money to throw around. I've made it a point to try and go at least once a year. They import their fish from Japan, so everything is exceptional quality (unlike any other I’ve ever had) and the taste experiences are incredible. The toro, both salmon and traditional tuna, are both to die for. The lighting and general vibe of the place are honestly just as appealing as the food, as it's the sort of place that makes you feel like you're partaking in an experience rather than just a meal. As said before, the quality is top notch, but you will shell out a good bit of money if you want to satisfy your appetite. The first time I went here, I spent approximately $140 on myself. The second time was in a group outing, paying for another person in the group, and we got a little loose with our ordering of food and drink. I think, with tip, it ended up being close to $450-$475. I nearly died when I saw that bill. Do I think it was worth it? Yes. Can I make it a regular thing? As someone who sometimes lives paycheck to paycheck, absolutely not. Hahaha. If you're planning on going, I would generally recommend reservations and booking about a month in advance. TLDR; The people who work there are knowledgable, the food is high quality and worth the price, but view this as a treat kind of place rather than a regular spot... that bill will hit you hard.”
“Really interesting aesthetic/decor. I enjoyed the food, it was cool to try the variety of sushi tacos that they had. The sashimi platter was quite fresh. Really enjoyed the fortified house soy sauce. Quality of the food was impeccable. Really like the onigiri, that was probably my favorite dish, as well as the mushroom taco and miso soup.”
“Really great sushi fish in rare form for Pittsburgh, but it comes at a cost. — so it’s a bit of a tricky 5 star from me. Overall let’s say we’re rounding up from something 4+. The design of the restaurant is beautiful, with wooden ribs flowing across the ceiling and continued in the furniture. This creates an obvious nautical vibe that’s of course tasteful and high-end. Service is initially prompt but expect to wait a while for main courses to come out. You’ll be able to find classics and rare Japanese options that most places wouldn’t bother to import, but oh my does the cost reflect that! When you’re the only game in town with quality like this, you get to set the prices. I kid you not, you may pay 10X the raw cost of the fish if you bought them yourself to make sushi — so 2 or 3 people could spend $1000 if they really wanted to get stuffed, but could eat a more dainty portion for an easy $50-100 per person. The sashimi and nigiri options are an obvious go-to so you’re going to see those in my photos. Expect: no dyes, no toxic additives- this is a real serious restaurant that knows what it’s doing, I just wish the price point was comparable to options in top food city destinations. We aren’t in an NYC skyscraper but you will be paying sky high prices to dine here on most dishes and get any reasonable quantity of food - if that’s important to you. So maybe don’t come totally famished? Could be a nice trick, maybe this is a pre-dinner quick bite? Who knows. Parking is plentiful in decks nearby. Would likely return when my bank account recovers. So yes, I recommended and praise Gi-Jin, but you have my big caveat on price reported multiple ways. Enjoy!”
“Never seen a place with $100/person serves tiramisu in a to-go box like this. Food is super salty and doesn’t worth the price. The fish is not fresh enough. Beef tataki is good, better than hand rolls at least.”
