Zaab Zaab’s co-owners are proud natives of Queens, opened their restaurant in the heart of Elmhurst’s Little Thailand in April of 2022 just before Songkran, or Thai New Year. The destination for authentic Isaan cuisine from Northeastern Thailand has received numerous accolades, including a 3-star review from Pete Wells of The New York Times, and being listed two years in a row on the NYT’s 100 Best Restaurants in NYC as well as being nominated as a semifinalist in the Best Restaurateur category for the 2024 James Beard Foundation Awards. Zaab Zaab is also recognized as a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant. Wei and Chunton a proud Thai-American who has been in the restaurant business for decades have been working together since 2018, when they opened a restaurant in Sunnyside, Queens, which was destroyed in a five-alarm fire.
“This is where me and my friends go for truly authentic dishes you can't find elsewhere, and the food is consistently high quality. I'm frankly surprised at the mid reviews here (esp disappointing to see people coming here looking for a pad Thai..) please try the fish or a seasonal dish -- they are always super fresh and full of flavors. Truly a blessing to have this in my neighborhood!”
“The papaya salad is fire! It is exactly what I had in Thailand. So if you can't handle Thai spicy, please tell them no spicy or very little spicy. Otherwise you will end up being full by drinking too much water!”
“Extremely delicious food, very authentic experience in case you are looking for a different flavor than most restaurants. Thai to the bones, hard seasoning, spicy stuff is actually spicy, everything is expensive as usual in NY. The plate that is clearly not a fish was an omelet with crab, deliiiicious. The fish ($40) was even better of course, bunch of flavors exploding in your mouth deliciously. Reduce options of drinks.”
“Rebranded as a second Zaab Zaab location after the OG one in Elmhurst. The menu here offer some of the same dishes with a toned down spice level, and focusing on more seafood items like the stuffed tilapia as the decor suggests. The dishes came out fast and hot. Good selection of cocktails too, servive bit slow when it's time for the check.”
“I genuinely don’t understand the hype around Zaab Zaab Elmhurst. We ordered the fried rice, drunken noodles, pad kra pao, and the ribeye steak. The steak was the only dish that showed any sign of life. Everything else tasted as if it had been rinsed with water before being served—completely stripped of seasoning, aroma, and any trace of authentic Thai flavor. It’s astonishing that a restaurant with such a strong reputation could produce food that’s less flavorful than the faux Thai takeout spots tucked inside Chinese restaurants off the Ohio Turnpike. That’s not an exaggeration. What’s even more baffling is the location. In the heart of Queens, surrounded by Thai restaurants serving bold, vibrant, unapologetically flavorful food, Zaab Zaab somehow manages to be a culinary desert. The fried rice was bland, the drunken noodles were lifeless, and the pad kra pao lacked the punch, basil, heat, and savoriness that define the dish. It honestly felt as though the menu had been engineered for diners who think black pepper is adventurous. Instead of authentic Thai flavors, everything seemed toned down to the point of being unrecognizable. For a restaurant with this reputation, the meal was a massive letdown. There are countless nearby Thai restaurants that deliver the bold, aromatic flavors Thailand is known for. Save your money and your appetite for one of them.”
