Opened in 1887, Peter Luger Steak House has become a culinary, historical and cultural landmark in the heart of Williamsburg. Serving only the finest USDA Prime Beef, Peter Luger has been honored with numerous awards, from a Michelin Star to Zagat’s best Steak House in New York for over 30 years and running to America’s Best Steak. The restaurant is family owned and operated, and all beef is hand-selected by a member of the family before being dry-aged on site.
“Going to Peter Luger feels a little like stepping into a time capsule that someone decided should also serve the best steak you've ever eaten. It's not fancy in any modern sense. The room is bare oak tables, wood paneling, and brusque waiters who've clearly been doing this longer than most of their customers have been alive. There are no credit cards accepted (cash, check, or a Peter Luger house account), and that's not an oversight, it's just how they do things. The porterhouse is the whole reason everyone is here, and it delivers in a way that's almost disarming. The steak arrives sizzling and already cut off the bone into thick slices, arranged on a tilted plate so the juices run to one end where you can spoon them back over everything. Medium rare here reads as an honest medium rare, with a deep charred crust and a rosy, almost buttery interior that doesn't need any sauce, though the house steak sauce is sweet and good anyway. We started with the thick-cut sizzling bacon, which is its own thing entirely, more like a slab of deeply smoky, caramelized pork than anything you'd put in a sandwich. The creamed spinach was rich without being heavy, a proper steakhouse side that doesn't try to compete with the beef. On the way out we shared one order of the German fried potatoes, crispy edged and quietly excellent. The service has a reputation for being gruff and some people find it off-putting, but honestly it's efficient and knowledgeable in a way that feels genuine rather than affected. Your waiter will make sure you know what to order and won't hover. That's not a bad trade. Reservations are essential, especially on weekends.”
“Honestly was expecting this place to be a total tourist trap given how famous it is, but the food is legitimately incredible. That porterhouse steak is insane, perfect char on the outside and just melts in your mouth. Even the thick bacon appetizer lived up to what everyone says about it. The waiters were actually great too, really professional and on top of everything, so the food came out super fast. It’s pretty loud in there because of how busy it gets.”
“Dining at Peter Luger Steak House was truly unforgettable. Honestly one of the best steaks I have ever tasted. The meat had that perfect texture — beautifully crispy on the outside, yet incredibly tender and juicy with every bite. The flavor was deep, rich, and cooked to perfection. Their famous sauce was also very unique and complemented the steak exceptionally well. Even the butter stood out — rich, flavorful, and surprisingly memorable on its own. No wonder this legendary steakhouse has received Michelin recognition for years and has remained iconic since 1887. A timeless New York dining experience that absolutely lives up to its reputation. 🥩✨”
“The BEST dry-aged steak in NY! The dry-aged steak was absolutely outstanding. The flavor was rich, perfectly balanced, and cooked exactly as ordered. You can really taste the quality and care in the aging process. The texture was tender, juicy, and incredibly satisfying. Service was attentive and friendly, making the whole experience even better. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and would definitely come back again. Highly recommended!”
“The steak is phenomenal in every sense. The dry age is perfect and the seasoning is just right. It truly is a quality steak. The portions on the salads, appetizers, and sides are large enough to share. The German hash browns were particularly delightful. The atmosphere is somewhat stale and the service is good, not great. Overall, one of my favorite New York steakhouses.”
