Descend into this underground Thai izakaya run by brothers Andy and Billy Thammasathit and their aunt Chef Satang Ruangsangwatana. Prepare to ignite your tongue. Dishes inspired by Bangkok’s Chinatown pack flavor and fire, best quenched with Andy’s tasty mai tais. You’ll swoon (and sweat) over spicy salmon crudo; wok-tossed TOM YUM noodles with roasted chili jam, and herbaceous duck laab. A “secret menu” reveals more treasures, as do frequent pop-ups with the smash hit Fat Nomads Supper Club.
“the food was very flavorful and beautifully presented. we ordered the duck laab, fried pork belly, and essan skewers. the duck laab was perfectly tangy, crunchy, and spicy. plenty of duck in there. essan skewers were a close second because of the delicious tamarind sauce. the pork was also great and came in a sizeable portion, but wished it was a little less dry. the green chili sauce (and the tamarind from the skewers) paired well with it. 5/5 for the food! the ambiance was good but could've been improved. the incense smell (saying this as someone who uses altar incense at home but is sensitive to strong smells) was overwhelmimg and the AC on full blast near the booths. the service was great, though. note the 20% service charge is automatically included!”
“I visited Sura a few weeks ago and it was definitely a great experience! I highly suggest to visit this place if you go around DuPont Circle. The food was excellent and service outstanding! Gratuity is included For groups of 4 or more I think but because of the amazing service you can always add a little bit more!! Thank you so much for the amazing time, I’ll be back soon.”
“We had such a great dinner in this restaurant. Food was very very tasty. Service was awesome. Salmon Crudo was my favorite. We ordered Lychee Martinis. Chilli Noodles also very good. Recommended.”
“This is a cute restaurant in the heart of DuPont Circle. Hidden in a corner basement. Atmosphere was calm and relaxing, but patrons tables seem too close together. One staff serving but every item came right on time and no mistakes noted. Restaurant was clean…including restrooms… To the food- every meal had a nice and upgraded taste to it. No overwhelming spice…enjoyed every meal and will definitely be back👍🏽”
“The No.1 restaurant of "Top DC Thai" on the Beli App. Claiming to be a Thai izakaya inspired by Bangkok's Chinatown, the regional characters are somehow confusing, and the food did indeed resemble Asian fusion. Salmon Crudo: Best dish of the meal, 5 stars. The salmon was fresh and high-quality, with a rich fatty aroma. The fresh chili, garlic slices, cilantro, and lime were the ingredients for authentic Thai seafood dip, and it was emulsified into a smoother, richer sauce that coats the salmon perfectly. Essan Skewers: The beef was grilled to tenderness. The dipping sauce and marinade were both tamarind-based, offering a refreshing sweet and sour flavor. The menu mentions roasted rice, but I didn't taste it. Beef Horapa: A "must-try" dish on the menu. Honestly, it's not bad. The Thai basil was fragrant, and the beef shank was tender and flavorful. However, the seasoning was like kra pow but without spiciness, and the braising before stir-frying resulted in insufficient wok hei鑊氣 (wok aroma), significantly diminishing the flavor. The entire combination felt like eating a simple entree with rice at a Caa Caan Teng茶餐廳 (Hong Kong-style cafe), clashing with the restaurant's style. Fresh Grapefruit Brûlée: I was really looking forward to the combination of grapefruit and crème brûlée, but it turned out to be just grapefruit sliced open and coated with caramel... I don't need to elaborate on the taste; it didn't even have the pulp pre-separated from the skin, making it very difficult to scoop out. So frustrating. I don't remember the exact name of the cocktail, but it was mango sticky rice and pandan flavor. The mango aroma was mellow and rich, very tasty. To be honest, I don't like such a dark environment. I can't see anything clearly, and it's not convenient to take pictures.”
